Wear Your EARidescent Best During Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend with this runDisney Style DIY
In little over a week, runners will begin arriving to the Walt Disney World Resort ready to run and be a part of The World’s Most Magical Celebration during the 2022 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend! Just as the theme parks will be shimmering and sparkling for the anniversary celebration, you’ll want to have a race outfit that fits right in. With inspiration taken from style icon Minnie Mouse and her 50th Anniversary EARidescent outfit, we’ve put together a running skirt DIY for you to make just in time for race weekend.
Supplies
- Tulle (either on spools, or by the yard), in corresponding colors
- Thick gold ribbon
- Thin gold ribbon
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Instructions
- First, measure around your waist with a measuring tape.
- Cut two strips of your thin gold ribbon to your waist measurement.
- Take your waist measurement and add an additional 40-50 inches (to allow room for tying skirt in the back) and cut the thick gold ribbon accordingly.
- Measure the length from your waist to where you would like your tutu to fall and then double that measurement.
- Cut strips of tulle 6 inches wide by however long you previously measured (and doubled) for the skirt length. The more strips you cut, the fuller and fluffier your skirt will be!
- Take your cut thick gold ribbon and wrap around your waist once more, finding where the two pieces come together at your back. Tie a knot at this point on both ribbon ends – you will tie your tulle to the ribbon between the knots.
- Now to assemble! Start by creating groupings of your cut tulle strips, laying two to three cut strips of each color on top of one another, with the darkest color on the bottom.
- Next, take your tulle strips grouping and fold it in half, slipping the folded part underneath the ribbon. Take the two long sides of the tulle and bring them up through the fold and pull tight. Then slide the tied tulle all the way to the left side of the ribbon.
- Repeat creating your groupings and tying them to your ribbon until you have filled in all the space between your two knots.
- Next to make the color layers! Starting with the lightest color on top (pink, for reference in the sample skirt), trim the tulle to be around four inches from the top of the skirt. Next, trim the middle color (teal, for reference in the sample skirt)), trim the tulle to be around eight inches from the top of the skirt.
- If desired, trim any uneven edges around the various tulle ends of your skirt.
- Finally, take your two pieces of thin gold ribbon and tie to the thick gold ribbon, on either side of where the tulle knots end. Weave the ribbon through the tulle knot groupings and tie once more to the opposite side.
Once you've finished the above steps, wrap the skirt around your waist and tie a bow in the back - you're now race day ready!
